Late last year I was in a hip hop frame of mind, I had the pleasure of linking up with a few of the new blood in the local hip hop arena and we released the single One Way Up which was a collaboration with local rapper St. Ans. I also got the chance to listen to a mixtape called Recession Music which was put out by another local rapper called Da Face. Two songs in particular caught my attention, Trini Punchlines and Cartoon Rap. I contacted Face and told him I wanted him to feature on a detnator track. I had just finished creating the beat All The Things which uses a sample from The Soul Survivors – Lover To Me and wanted to do something with it. I sent the beat to Face and told him to write whatever he felt on it, whatever he thought needed to be said on the track was cool with me. I like to give artists free reign to interpret a track in their own way… it makes for a more creatively dynamic situation when coming up with a finished product.
