[Detnator & Daaknite]

Start to spar with my own evil shadow

Verse 1

Ah practicing mih art like it is a form

Down in depths I challenging the norm

Changing mih game face I set mihself a pace

I done take a charge to lead de race

Hear de chant as I belt it out

Demons done scatter when ah open up mih mout

Glorify, Rastaman say I

Feeling the body pressure building in I

Taking careful steps when ah break this down

CHORUS

Oh Lord, If yuh feel the power come in strong

Lord If yuh feel the power come in strong

Just bring it in da dance

Bring it in da dance

Verse 2

Start to spar with mih own evil shadow

Feet twist fast cause I dont want no follow

Catch de swing when mih tongue do ting

Whole evening is me practicing

Rip yuh shirt off if the spirit catch yuh

Let the energy that it begging travel thru yuh

Hands so nimble and the muscles tremble

The might of de chant is the master lesson

CHORUS

Oh Lord if yuh feel the power come in strong

Lord if yuh feel the power come in strong

Just bring it in da dance

Bring it in da dance

Verse 3:

dazed and amazing sights done catch yuh mind

Travelling thru dimensions in time

Meet your forefathers and yuh great granddaughter

All for this little piece of soil on water

Danger skitter on the edge of power

Conduit is me, look me fly like Jet Li

Rampaging thru the towers of your mind

All these words transcend hyper time

The amazing coming, bombs out of lair

Looking for the evil overLord in his chair

Laughing out ferociously, I’m in his hair

Killer sound rude boy done chant like ah dont care

CHORUS:

Oh Lord, If yuh feel the power come in strong

Lord If yuh feel the power come in strong

Just bring it in da dance

Bring it in da dance

Verse:

people feel ah kicksing when my head be tripping

Bombs will be blasting when my mout start opening

Juicing up yuh mind or preparing for war

Hold the mic firm as yuh stepping to the door

Make sure what yuh say yuh come to say it sure

Grit them teeth cause in here is the Law

Messiah in the wire begging for the praise in awe

Holding up the words cause in words is the Law

so on storytelling, on dissing, on chanting on

enemies hating on what it is ah saying

CHORUS

Just bring it in da dance

Bring it in da dance

Start to spar with my own evil shadow

Start to spar with my own evil shadow

We Does Draw

I visited Trincity Mall’s Food Court on New Year’s Day to check out James Hackett as well as Claire Hamel-Smith, Makesi Aquan, Nabeel Mohammed, Omari Hutchinson, Rene Holder, Ryan Rodriguez and a couple other artists at the “We Does Draw” event. It’s actually a pretty decent idea where artists would sit around a table and simply draw and lime. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to be around for the majority of the day, I only got there around 4 o clock but the scene caused quite a buzz as passersby looked on very intrigued at what was taking place.  Initiatives like this serve many purposes on many different levels without even trying and that is why I liked it so much. Apart from building a community among local artists, it also raised an awareness with the public that these artists exist and gave them a very down to earth glimpse of their creative processes, which doesn’t have to be anything grand or aloof so interested parties may not be too intimidated to come and ask a question or even to participate.

I’m hoping to somehow form a collaboration between We Does Draw and the DND project in the future.

Share The Care

A couple months ago my friends Leo & Dayner at Marcastuta Ltd hired us to work on a tv campaign for an ngo called UNIFEM. The title of the campaign is Share The Care. This is one of the three TVCs we developed for it:

UNIFEM SHARE THE CARE 45″ FEMALE TVC from the detnator on Vimeo.

Having never worked on a TV Commercial before and not considering ourselves video editors or filmmakers, we were a bit daunted by the task at first. But Dayner & Leo were confident and convinced that we could pull it off delivering a professional, high quality product. Interestingly enough, they saw our promo for Curious Ringo – Nah Beg Dem Friend and that is what sold them on our capabilities to handle the task.

It was a combination of a lot of hard work as well as a lot of fun and definitely a learning process. From casting, to lighting to sound we literally had to take crash courses from the university of youtube to attain a certain level of proficiency that was required to complete this job. When all else failed I made a couple calls to my friend Thomas K Jemmerson who IS a filmmaker, he gave a couple pointers which helped greatly. Thanks Thomas!

In the end we came out with a good product and we’re now eager to work on another project! We must thank Marcastuta for the opportunity as well as the support for this project!

OneTalks – Ben Jackson

The latest episode of OneTalks features Ben Jackson. You may ask “who the hell is Ben Jackson and why should I care about what he thinks?” Well, we were prepared for that line of questioning…

Ben Jackson has been involved in the Pan movement in Trinidad & Tobago for over 25 years. He has grown from player to instructor to music teacher and back again. His career started as a player in Laventille Sound Specialists now known as the Courts Sound Specialists. He was also a member of the Success Laventille Composite School Steel Orchestra where he moved on to become the musical director of that band. He then became a music teacher at that school for seven years then moved on to be a part of the Pan In The Classroom project. He is presently involved in the HYPE program as a music instructor.

We sat with Ben to have a conversation about the thing he loves most.

One Way Up

Yesterday we had a session scheduled with local rapper St. Ans to drop a verse on a track that we’re putting on a mixtape that is to be released soon. He came through and brought fire to the track, setting the pace for the overall thing. Unfortunately, we can’t share that just yet but we did manage to work on another song. This was completely spontaneous… a beat that I was working on just before St. Ans came through to the studio that I was still in the process of making caught his attention and he began to put pen to paper. Midway through he asked “so when do you think we could actually finish this song?” to which I replied “Tonight!”. So after a few hours we emerged with the track St. Ans – One Way Up.

Enjoy.

Storyteller Ghost Writer

Back in 2000 or 2001 a friend of mine, Casey Johnson brought two artistes home by me for me to do some production for. One of them was singing soca, he sang two songs for me a kind of latin influenced soca tune called Maria and another double entente song called Rick. This artiste never came back but went on to win synergy soca star in 2006 with the song Danger and is now known in the music world as Fireball.

The other artiste Casey brought by was a young rapper by the name of Zeik. After hearing him rap the song Syndrome acapella it was clear to me that this fella was on another level. However, from his demeanor you would never tell that he could spit that type of fire. He was a very calm person that did not display the level of cockiness you would expect from an emcee on that level, so much so that I wondered if he knew how sick he was. It was not before long that we decided to work on an album that would showcase the material he already had written. The thing is, a lot of it to me was bordering on gritty/ gangster and I was approaching a point where I was ready to take a stance on the type of music I put out into the world.

Zeik - All About Z

We agreed to mix up the content on the album a bit so you would find that a couple tracks on the album are hard hitting while others are contemplative/ introspective and others are just a basic display of emceeing ability. Years went by as we worked on and off on that album, we finally completed it in 2005 and that became a milestone in both our careers, however I still saw untapped potential in Zeik and challenged him to challenge himself. I wanted him to push himself to the limits of his imagination and creativity.

About three days after issuing that challenge we were on our way to the studio by Chenko and I was playing some beats in the car. A beat came on which at the time was titled Haunting… Zeik started to spit some lyrics on the beat. I pulled the car over to the side of the road and started the beat over. Zeik started again… after regaining consciousness he explained to me the concept of the song. It was based on the conversations we were having and he wrote a song about him meeting a future version of himself in a dream. This future version of himself was more experienced and more mature as an emcee gave his present self some advice on mastering the craft of emceeing.

To this day, Ghost Writer has to be one of the most potent songs Zeik has ever recorded and one of those moments that will always stand out for me in the many years that I have been making music.

“shrapnel everywhere…”

That was a comment posted by Will on our latest offering and the inspiration for this latest post. Since the DND project kicked off in the Food & Folk Fair and the appearance we made in Erotic Art Week with James Hackett things just seem to be bubbling. More and more the creative juices are flowing and good things just keep happening creatively in and out of studio. Last weekend my cousin Sage dropped by and spent the day in the lab working on some stuff, this weekend who knows what’s going to happen. We’ll soon have Curious back in studio to complete recording his album, have to finish some stuff with Andy Venture and we have a little collab to do with Rembunction shhh…. doh tell anybody! it’s a secret! Oh yeah, also did a track with my pops recently that came out pretty decent, Quincy has some lyrics for this one, we just need a vocalist to work with to deliver on this track… A lot is happening and that’s just on the TT side of things, Spann also has a lot bubbling in Canada so it’s really going to be “shrapnel everywhere”.

All in all the next month or so should be a very interesting time, lots to do which means a lot more content is going to be online for your enjoyment.

Stay Tuned People.

When the waters subsided…

Last week the unthinkable happened. Those of you who follow us on twitter may have seen a tweet where I mentioned that the studio got flooded out and the aftermath was nothing short of nasty. Wet carpet smells like… well I don’t even know what it smells like it just smells STINK!!!

Unfortunately I don’t have any footage of the ordeal but after getting over my anger and frustration I was encouraged by Spann to pick up the cam and capture some footage of the clean up process. I figure this was going to be quite an undertaking but a good bredren made a call and sorted out the whole situation for me.

I called a few places before and I got a lot of stories and excuses why the job could not be done at the time etc, so I was more than grateful when Chris & Matt came through and gave a much needed helping hand or hands as the case may be.

In return, the least I could have done was bubble some chicken breasts with whole wheat wraps, edit the video together to post it online and make sure to do some online advertising for Chris.

So all you folks out there who may be looking to get that wall to wall carpet cleaned, that rug or even the interior of you car, check Matt on facebook and he will see to it that you get your scene sorted.

Much thanks again fellas!
