Who would’ve thought… Detnator releases for Carnival 2015?
No we aren’t trolling the internet, we’ve actually done some new music aimed towards the carnival season in Trinidad & Tobago (and the Bahamas…look out for that!) but we’ve also focused on making it as non-seasonal as possible. This means that come April, August or October 2015, the music that we put out should be just as relevant and fresh. Here’s a look at some of the work we’ve put out over the past few months.
This was created on Ash Wednesday 2014. After working on the SOCALLED Remixes project with A_phake I really wanted to do something different. So I decided to produce a Soca track with a hiphop approach i.e. using samples. I had no intention of recording any songs on it, this was purely a spur of the moment, creative spark that I wanted to put out. A few days after uploading it to Soundcloud, my bredren Keivon Atwell of ThinkTankConcepts called me on the phone and said “aye listen to this”…. in the background the beat was playing and a voice, clearly Jamaican, was singing a song on the beat. My mind was instantly blown when I heard Pysano singing “Reds”, we recorded that song a few days later and then got the idea to feature other people on the beat.
I immediately thought Remy was a perfect fit for this riddim and I wasn’t wrong! Rembunction wrote and performed the song “Rick” in the storytelling tradition of calypso… a story of romance and heartbreak 🙂
We also sent the 401 riddim to a few soca artists. When KI called me and said “yo Baidawi this riddim hard and I have a big tune for it, trust mih…” I really didn’t know what to expect, but his excitement alone was enough to anticipate something epic…
Keivon wanted to use The Bomb Shelter as a location for an interview shoot as a segment in the TV series Front Row. It was during that interview that Dyson Knight (the interviewee) came up with the idea for the song Las Lap and I started creating music for it on the spot. He left to return to The Bahamas, but we kept in touch and collaborated on the song until we had a finished product.
I was in the studio with A_phake during a rehearsal for a live performance set for the Only A Fool project. We were transferring Ableton session files and A_phake was like “aye I have a beat there, ah try a futrerapso ting… see what yuh could do with it nah”. The beat was already mad and I told him I didn’t know what else I could do with it, but after a week or two of tinkering it finally came together. The original plan was to assemble an all rapso cast on this riddim but it was so evidently versatile in how it could be interpreted and full of energy that we decided to try different styles on it. We’re currently working on some other tracks so this blog post will be updated as we finish new songs on the Dark Jab Riddim.
Obviously we had to bring in Curious on this. It was during this freestyle session that he came up with the idea for the track:
After recording the song we decided to shoot a video… I heard an ad for the NCC Regional Launch of Carnival 2015 on the radio. This was the perfect opportunity to shoot a video with Curious interacting with traditional mas characters. Big up to Thomas Jemmerson for helping me execute this shoot.
Rembunction answered the call and brought an insane amount of energy as well as that immaculate flow and hard lyrics on his track “Lose Control”
Dyson Knight is definitely going to Ramshack De Road with his track “Watch Meh”!
Stay Tuned for more songs on this riddim!
Its no secret, some of the best Trinbagonian limes take place in the comfort of one’s home, food cooking, drinks flowing, music playing and great company with friends and family create the most memorable experiences. Remy recorded the idea for this tune a couple of years old and we decided to take it off the shelf and dust off the cobwebs when Manchilde paid a visit to the studio in 2013 and fell in love with the concept. He wrote and recorded his verse then Remy finished putting together his parts for the tune. This is the end result:

Much respect. Detnator.
